ST. LEON - Edged out by a 12.5-point margin by East Central in last year’s Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference championship meet, South Dearborn High School varsity wrestlers knew full well that there are no gimmes on the mat. After watching Indiana Hall of Fame coach Scott Schwarz’s Trojans the 130-pound consolation fina
tie Franklin County with their eighth EIAC title all-time in 2009, SD coach George Gardner’s Knights came right back and joined the party. South Dearborn racked up a 238-193 conference meet victory over second-place East Central - making it a three-way tie with its eighth championship. Gardner, in his 23rd year as head coach, marked South Dearborn’s third EIAC crown in four years on the strength of five weight class champions, out of a total of 10 final round qualifiers. Leading the way was unbeaten senior 130-pound standout Tyler Clark (30-0), who nailed down his fourth consecutive divisional title, along with a third-straight conference Most Valuable Wrestler award. Clark, ranked No. 4 in the current state coaches’ association weight class poll, pulled off two quick pins, in 1:34 over Lawrenceburg’s Trent Eliason and 1:13 over Batesville’s Brad Doehrman in the title round. South Dearborn’s EIAC individual champions also included Jacob McCord (21-11) at 112 pounds, junior Nick Manning (28-2) at 152, senior Kevin Wilger (24-9) at 189 and senior Ron Forman (22-3) at 215. Giving a good account in a rebuilding year under new coach Derek Rehage, East Central’s Trojans matched SD with five weight class winners, of a total eight final round qualifiers. Senior 103-pounder Garrett Brasier led the way for EC, with the Struewing brothers - freshman Brian and senior Chris - following suit in the 112 and 135-pound divisions. Junior Mark Brown needed 5-6 time outs to stanch the flow from a bloody nose, but prevailed 7-3 over SD’s Nick Harrell in a ferocious 160-pound title matchup. EC heavyweight freshman Ricky Brown, Mark’s brother, made it 2-for-2 in Trojan family titles, pinning SD’s Nathan Craig in 2:19.5. SD runners-up Saturday also included Justin Ballard (135), Jesse Adams (140), and Jamie Barron (145). East Central second finishers were Lucas Gramman (119), Zach Hutcinson (152) and Cameron McMullen (189). Lawrenceburg’s Tigers, sixth as a team, got a third finish from Eliason inl. |

Lawrenceburg Police have issued at least 50 written warnings for illegal left turns from Front Street onto U.S. 50 since last fall when the new U.S. 50 Tanners Creek bridge opened. The time for warnings has come to an end, and police will be issuing tickets to people who turn left onto westbound U.S. 50 from Front Street, said assistant chief Don Combs Jr. “We continue to get calls from drivers regarding the left turns,” he said. The turns are a safety hazard and cause traffic to back up on Front Street, he said. To go west on U.S. 50 from Front Street drivers should go straight on Front, turn left at Fourth Street and turn left on Main Street to access the on ramp. The no left turn restriction is clearly marked and drivers should obey the law, added Combs. Drivers also can use Walnut Street and Arch Street to access westbound U.S. 50 from downtown Lawrenceburg. Meanwhile, LPD responded to 6,371 911 calls in 2009, with about 1,000 more calls coming directly into the police station, said chief Gene Hunefeld. Lawrenceburg Fire Department responded to 504 911 calls, and the Lawrenceburg life squad answered 1,556 calls for assistance in 2009. Lawrenceburg Emergency Rescue Unit director Bobby Mills said the number of calls was down about 100 for the year. |
